
Major Takes 1st in 200-meter Dash

BLACKSBURG, Va. – Sophomore Benjamin Major III won the 200-meter dash for NC State Friday evening in the final event of the first day of action at the Virginia Tech Challenge. Major’s time of 21.42 seconds was his second best time of the season in that event.
Though most of the Wolfpack’s distance runners and All-ACC thrower Lawanda Henry did not participate in the meet at Rector Field House on the Virginia Tech campus, several other Wolfpack performers did well.
Junior sprinter Miles Walker advanced to the finals of the 60-meter dash, where he finished seventh in a time of 6.98 seconds.
In the field events, Brittany Hampton and Jessica Sanders finished second and third, respectively, in the 20-pound weight throw. Hampton’s toss of 58-feet, 11 ½ inches was her best of the season. Sanders’ throw measured 56-feet, 10 ¼ inches.
In the men’s weight thrown, Grant Pearce was fourth with a throw of 59-feet, 5 inches. Freshman Nathaniel Williams was seventh with a season-best 54-feet, 11 ¼ inches.
Sophomore Karimah Shepherd was fourth in the long jump at 18-feet, 11 ¼ inches, while sophomore Ashley Orr finished seventh and matched her best jump of the season at 18-feet, 1 ½ inches.
Senior Lamont Savage was fifth in the long jump at 22-feet, 11 ¼ inches.
The second day of action begins Saturday at 11 a.m. at Rector Field House.
