BLACKSBURG, Va. --- Bonae Holston, Marissa Kastanek and Amber White combined for 54 points to send NC State to an 81-65 win over Virginia Tech Thursday night at Cassell Coliseum.
Holston led NC State (11-15, 2-9 ACC) with 20 points and 11 rebounds for her eighth double-double of the season. Kastanek and White each added 17 points, while Kody Burke and Brittany Strachan rounded out a balanced attack with 11 and 10 points, respectively.
Monet Tellier tied a career-high with 23 points to pace Virginia Tech (11-15, 1-10 ACC).
A 14-5 run out of halftime, capped by a three-pointer right in front of the Wolfpack bench by Strachan, made it 48-36 in favor of the Pack.
The senior from Kernersville, N.C., connected again from distance moments later to give NC State a 53-38 lead with 13:27 left to play.
Tellier did everything she could to keep the Hokies within striking distance. The freshman from Charlotte scored 16 straight points at one point in the second half, but the Pack still led 60-52 with 9:07 to play.
The Hokies got within seven, 67-60 with 4:36 left, but a lightning-quick 12-2 spurt put the Pack up 79-62. Kastanek fueled the late stages of the run with eight-consecutive points.
The Wolfpack got off to one of its best starts of the season. A fastbreak layup from White made it 15-4 just 3:41 into action.
The shots continued to fall for the Pack - making nine of its first 16 shots that resulted in a 22-10 lead.
Holston was the story of the first 20 minutes. She wasted no time in extending her double-figure scoring streak to 23 games. Her 10th point came at the 7:56 mark, giving the visitors a 27-17 advantage.
A Holston put back made it 33-23 with just over four minutes left in the first half as the junior scored 14 points before half.
Virginia Tech finally answered back with an 8-1 run over the final 4:05 to cut the Pack’s lead to 34-31 at intermission.
NC State hosts North Carolina on Monday at 7 p.m.
