SEATTLE - Sophomore Ryan Hill, competing in just his second race of the indoor season, shattered a 20-year-old school record and posted an NCAA automatic qualifying time of 7:50.78 in the 3,000 meters against a world-class field of collegiate and postcollegiate runners at the Husky Invitational on Saturday.
The three-time All-American in track and cross country was fourth overall in the race, but finished just 19 hundreths of a second behind the top collegiate runner, Oregon senior and four-time All-American Matthew Centrowitz, and less than a second behind winner Tim Nelson of Nike.
Hill's time was one of the five fastest posted this year for a Division I runner and shaved more than five seconds off the old school record of 7:55.81, set by Bob Henes in 1991.
Wolfpack teammate Andrew Colley, the only other runner from NC State to compete at the Husky Classic, finished 32nd in the same event with a time of 8:02.71.
