Exams are over for the Wolfpack, and can now concentrate on finishing up strong in the non-conference portion of the schedule. The club has posted back-to-back victories over South Carolina and Alabama to get the month of December off on the correct foot.
NC State dismantled the Crimson Tide to the tune of a 79-57 final score at Reynolds. The lead grew to as much as 34 points midway through the second half, before most of the regulars were removed from the game. In fact, Marissa Kastanek's 24 minutes led the team, as 13 players saw time in the victory.
Kastanek led with a game-high 13 points, and senior Bonae Holston had 10 points and 10 rebounds for her 20th career double-double.
Thursday will be another stern test as the 7-2 Spiders come to Raleigh. They are coming off a 75-60 win over UNC Greensboro last Saturday as four players scored in double figures in the win over the Spartans.
Richmond's freshman Amber Battle (Apex, N.C.) is the daughter of two former Wolfpack basketball players. Father, Alvin, was a member of the 1983 NCAA championship team, while mother, Debbie Shugart, played for for the Wolfpack women under Hall of Fame coach Kay Yow. Additionally, the Spiders also have Raleigh native Amber Nichols on their squad, a sophomore guard.
NC State hosts No. 20 Vanderbilt on Sunday at 2 p.m. The matchup marks the first ranked non-conference opponent to play at Reynolds Coliseum since #22 BYU defeated the Pack, 69-57, on Dec. 14, 2002.
