FORT WORTH, TEXAS – Kody Burke’s 15-point, 13-rebound performance led the NC State women’s basketball team to an 85-79 victory at TCU on Sunday from Daniel-Meyer Coliseum.
Senior All-ACC forward Bonae Holston scored 17 points and grabbed nine boards for NC State, who improves to 3-0 for the first time under head coach Kellie Harper.
Burke’s third career double-double featured her tying a career high with 13 rebounds. Sophomore Myisha Goodwin-Coleman and freshman guard Krystal Barrett each tossed in 15 points apiece for the Wolfpack.
Natalie Ventress paced TCU (1-3) with 21 points.
Trailing 61-58 with 12:13 to play, NC State ran off 12 consecutive points to grab a 70-61 advantage with less than 10 minutes left. The Horned Frogs never got closer than three points the rest of the way.
When the lead was cut down to 70-67, freshman Erica Donovan came up with a traditional three-point play that gave State a little breathing room down the stretch.
Barrett and the rest of the Texas born players played in front of a couple hundred friends and family. The Dallas native played crucial second-half minutes for Harper to help fend off TCU.
NC State started fast by making five of its first six shots to take a 12-5 lead in the opening four minutes. Burke was dominating in the opening minutes on both ends of the court. She made two buckets, hauled in two rebounds, blocked a shot and forced a 5-second call – all in the first 80 seconds of play.
The shots continued to fall for the Pack as the lead was 22-16 after a three-pointer from Goodwin-Coleman.
TCU fought back to square the game 22-all on a three from Ventress with under 12 minutes to play in first half.
The Horned Frogs actually pieced together a five-point, 34-29, advantage by the 6:58 mark, but the Pack answered back with the next five points to square the game at 34-all.
Neither team led by more than three points the rest of the half. A Holston jumper gave the visitors a 44-43 lead at the break.
Holston moved into 20th on NC State’s career scoring chart after passing Summer Erb early in the first half. She has compiled 1,232 points in her college career.
NC State hosts Jacksonville on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
