RALEIGH, N.C. - The 2011 NC State softball alumni game, held Saturday Jan. 22, was, despite freezing temperatures, a highly successful event. Nearly a dozen former Wolfpack student-athletes returned to Raleigh to battle the current Pack softball squad in a friendly game at Curtis and Jacqueline Dail Softball Stadium.
Wolfpack softball greats of the past Tess Corona Martin, Abbie Sims, Lisa Nentwig, Beth Poore, Heather Gelbard, Blair Harkey Stephenson, Caroline Blount, Laura Klem, Mackenzie Mangum, Allison Presnell and Claudia Cooper took part in the game.
"It was great day," said head coach Lisa Navas. "Although the weather was cold, it was so much fun, and was a good opportunity for our current players to meet alumni and hear some of their stories."
The alumni certainly proved that they still have playing ability, and ended up winning the game. Sims put forth a strong performance in the circle, giving current Pack players a difficult time at the plate. In the end, a Corona Martin single sealed the victory for the former players.
The weekend did not end after the game, however. On Sunday, Jan. 23, Navas and the Wolfpack staff and alumni enjoyed NC State's men's basketball game versus Miami, where the Pack defeated the Hurricanes. There, the 2006 ACC Championship squad was recognized before the game for its great accomplishments.
"Sunday was also great to be honored at the men's basketball game for the fifth anniversary of our ACC championship," said Navas. "Also, it was a good win for our men's basketball team, and awesome to be present for the tribute to 100 years of basketball at NC State."
Overall, the weekend was extremely successful for both current and former players, a tradition Navas looks forward to continuing in the future.
Wolfpack softball opens the 2011 season Feb. 10 at USF in Tampa, Fla.
