RALEIGH, N.C. -
The NC State men’s tennis team will open up its spring season on Saturday, Jan. 15, against Davidson and UNC Wilmington at the J.W. Isenhour Tennis Center. The Wolfpack is ranked No. 57 nationally in the latest poll released by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA).
The Pack's first match against Davidson will take place at 10 a.m., followed by a 6 p.m. tilt against UNC Wilmington. The Wildcats and Seahawks will meet each other at 2 p.m.
Live stats for both matches will be available via GoPack.com at this link.
NC State is 19-10 all-time vs. Davidson, 6-0 against UNCW.
“We are excited about opening up the season this weekend,” said head coach Jon Choboy. “The team has really been working hard all year with physical conditioning, grinding it out and improving their game. It’ll be nice to get out there as a group and start building some cohesiveness in dual matches.
“We are looking forward to having a good crowd like we did for ‘Pack Prowl’ this past Wednesday.”
NC State returns 10 letterwinners from last year’s group that finished with a No. 59 national ranking. All-ACC honoree Jaime Pulgar highlights the cast after going 14-9 a year ago at No. 1 singles. Dominic Hodgson and Dave Thomson both return as well, with Hodgson going 15-10 and Thomson posting a 16-9 slate in 2010.
Pulgar is currently ranked No. 61 nationally after a sensational fall showing, while Hodgson (No. 82) and Thomson (No. 106) are included in the latest ITA singles rankings.
Davidson (0-0) returns seven players and welcomes four newcomers to the fold. The Wildcats went 10-11 a year ago, going 4-6 in SoCon play.
A veteran UNCW (0-0) squad boasts six returning players, including the No. 43-ranked doubles tandem of Michael Pereira and Kinshuk Sharma. The Seahawks are coached by former NC State women’s tennis assistant Mait DuBois, who led UNCW to a CAA title in 2009 and its first appearance in the NCAA Tournament.
NC State, which boasts one of the most challenging schedules in the nation this season, will hit the road next weekend to face No. 13 Louisville and No. 46 Indiana.
