RALEIGH, N.C. – The NC State men’s tennis program has been racking up some big wins on the international doubles stage this week, courtesy of current student-athlete Jaime Pulgar and former four-year letterwinner Christian Welte. Pulgar and his brother, Javier, are currently in the doubles draw finals at the Spain F21 Futures, while Welte and his partner Blake Strode have reached the championship tilt at the Morocco F3 Futures.
The Pulgar brothers have collected three wins en route to advancing to the title bout, starting with a 6-1, 6-0 decision over Sylvain Anibie and Adriano Quinti in the opener. The pair then knocked off the No. 1 seed in Agustin Boje-Ordonez and Pablo Martin-Adalia, 6-3, 6-2, before collecting a walkover against Riccardo Maiga and Uros Vico in the semifinals. Jaime and Javier will face second-seeded Abraham Gonzalez-Jimenez and Miguel-Angel Lopez Jaen in the final.
Jaime topped Lopez Jaen, 6-3, 6-2, earlier this month during singles play at the Spain F20 Futures.
“Jaime is having a sensational summer,” said Wolfpack head coach Jon Choboy. “Earlier this month he picked up his first professional points, which is a huge step for any tennis player. His game has improved so much since joining our program, and that’s evident in the fact that he picked up All-ACC honors this past season and he is enjoying a strong summer.
“We know he’s looking forward to getting back to Raleigh and collecting some big points for us in the spring.”
Welte and Strode’s road to the final round begin with a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Renato Assad and Karim Kadry. The pair then toppled No. 4 seed Motaz Abou El Khair and Mohamed Mamoun, 6-2,6-3, before punching their ticket to the championship match with a 7-6 (5), 6-2, win against second-seeded Steven Diez and Gerard Granollers-Pujol. The duo will take on No. 3 seed Marc Auradou and Gleb Sakharov for the doubles crown.
“Christian is playing extremely well this summer, having beaten three world-ranked players during singles at an ITF Futures event in Mexico last month,” said Choboy. “I couldn’t be more proud of the effort that he is showing. He has become a very mature and passionate player with a bright future in this game.”
