RALEIGH, N.C. – NC State softball will return to conference action this weekend, hosting Maryland at the Curtis & Jacqueline Dail Softball Stadium on campus for a three-game ACC series, April 24-25. Action begins at 12 noon on Saturday and 1 p.m. on Sunday.
NC State trails in the all-time series by one game, 8-9. Last season the Terrapins took two of three from the Wolfpack in College Park.
NC State (27-21 / 8-7 ACC) enjoyed an offensive explosion this past Wednesday in a doubleheader sweep at UNC Wilmington, picking up wins by scores of 7-2 and 15-4. The Wolfpack clubbed five homers across the twin bill, with Stephanie Call going deep twice and Bridget Desbois, Alyssa Allbritten and Allison Presnell all going yard once.
Call’s second blast, her 14th on the season, set a new school record for home runs in a single season, besting the old mark of 13 shared by Jen Chamberlin (2006, 07) and Heather Gelbard (2007).
Call (8-8, 2.49 ERA) and Morgan Peeler (3-5, 4.65 ERA) both picked up wins over the Seahawks. Lindsay Campana, who rested on Wednesday, remains the team ace with a 16-8 record and a pristine 1.00 ERA. She has fanned 215 batters in 168 2/3 innings of work, allowing just 24 earned runs.
Maryland (27-18 / 5-9 ACC) sits in sixth place in the conference standings, despite having won its last two conference series by taking two of three games from both Virginia Tech and North Carolina.
Alex Shutlz has been sensational for the Terps, starting all 45 games and posting a team-best .433 batting average. She leads the roster in total bases (92), hits (55), runs scored (35), RBIs (32), doubles (12) and home runs (7).
The Pack will likely face Kerry Hickey (16-8, 1.72 ERA, 167.1 IP, 192 K’s) and Kendra Knight (10-9, 1.63 ERA, 129 IP, 193 K’s) in the circle. Lexi Carroll has tossed two innings for Maryland this season, allowing two earned runs.
NC State will wrap up ACC play next weekend at home, May 1-2, against Georgia Tech.
