CARY, N.C. - The No. 51 NC State men's tennis team fought hard against No. 42 Miami in the first round of the ACC Tournament, but fell short 4-1. The loss drops the Wolfpack to 15-12 for the year.
In doubles, the Hurricanes took the first two matches to clinch the point. Akash Gujarati and Rob Lowe lost 8-5 to Carl Sundberg and Ignacio Taboada. Jaime Pulgar and Dave Thomson were defeated 8-6 by Keith Crowley and Hector Nieto. Dominic Hodgson and Frideric Prandecki were tied with No. 81 Christian Blocker and David Simon 7-7 before the point was clinched.
The Pack were playing well in singles, but the doubles point made things easier for the Canes. Hodgson was the first to finish, losing 6-3 6-0 to No. 122 Blocker. D. Thomson made the match interesting by beating Simon 6-2, 6-4.
Unfortunately Miami came back and won the next two matches. Gujarati was beaten 6-1, 6-4 by Crowley, while Prandecki lost 6-3, 6-4 to Taboada to give the Canes the win.
Rafael Paez was in his third set with Waylon Chin, winning the first 6-3 and losing the second 6-3. No. 67 Pulgar led Sundberg 7-5, 4-0 before the match was decided.
The men's tennis team will now wait to hear if it is selected for the NCAA tournament later this month, and if any players are chosen for the individual championships.
