CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Virginia used a two-out Nicole Koren single to center to grab the only run of the game and beat NC State, 1-0, in an ACC series rubber match on Sunday, April 18.
NC State moves to 25-21 (8-7 ACC) with the loss, while the Cavaliers climb to 27-18 (9-5 ACC).
Stephanie Call (7-8) held the Cavaliers hitless for 4 2/3 innings until Alison Pittman beat out an infield single to second. She allowed just three hits and five total base runners in her second strong pitching performance in as many days. Melanie Mitchell (21-13) picked up the win.
Virginia took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the sixth, but several strong defensive plays kept the Cavaliers from putting more runs on the board. Taylor Williams pushed a base hit through the right side to start the inning, and Alex Skinkis then attempted to move Williams to second with a sac-bunt. Bridget Desbois knew a bunt was coming towards third however, and fired a rocket to Breanna Andrews for the force out at second base. Andrews later robbed Lauren McCaskey of a single through the left side with a backhanded stab at short.
But Koren eventually handed UVa the only run it would need on a base hit into center, playing Skinkis with two outs.
