No. 50 M. Tennis Gets By Maryland 4-3

Raleigh, N.C. - The No. 50 NC State men's tennis team returned home for the first time in two weeks and took down Maryland 4-3 on Friday, April 16. The win moves the Wolfpack to 14-11 and 2-8 in the ACC, while dropping the Terrapins to 13-11 and 1-9 in the ACC.
The Pack came out firing and doubles play, winning the first two matches. Akash Gujarati and Rob Lowe were the first to be victorious, defeating John Collins and Jesse Kuiru 8-4. About 5 seconds later, Dominic Hodgson and Frideric Prandecki gave NC State the doubles point with an 8-3 win over Graham Knowlton and Ian Manfield. With doubles decided, Jaime Pulgar and Dave Thomson lost 8-7 (2) in a tiebreaker to Tommy Laine and Sergio Wyss.
In singles the Wolfpack needed just three wins, which is exactly what it got. Lowe's match was the first to finish on the day, and he lost 6-2, 6-1 to Ryan Lissner. However both of NC State's ranked players made quick work of their opponents. No. 62 Pulgar breezed past Collins 6-3, 6-0. Newly ranked No. 111 Hodgson made things look easy with a 6-0, 6-3 win over Laine.
The Terps inched back when Gujarati lost 6-2, 6-4 to Knowlton.
The hero of the day was D. Thomson. After winning the first set 6-3 over Wyss, the Terrapin tried to make things interesting notching the second set 6-6. With the win on the line for the Pack, D. Thomson came through and won the tiebreak 7-5 to win the match 6-3, 7-6 (5).
With the match decided, Rafael Paez lost in three set 7-5, 0-6, 6-4 to Kiuru.
The Wolfpack will return to the court for its final regular season match of the year against Boston College on Sunday, April 18 at noon. It will be senior day for Prandecki.
