NC State Hosts Duke: No. 40 NC State plays host to No. 27 Duke on Wednesday, March 31 at 2:30 p.m.
The Series Versus Duke: This will be the 62nd meeting between the Pack and Blue Devils, which is the longest series in the history of NC State men’s tennis. The two met last year, with Duke winning 5-2.
Pulgar Named ACC Player of the Week: Jaime Pulgar was honored as the ACC Men’s Tennis Player of the Week for his performance against three conference foes. Pulgar’s big win was over No. 5 Guillermo Gomez of No. 29 Georgia Tech. Two days earlier he beat Carlos Alvarez of No. 33 Clemson. Pulgar’s week also included a pair of wins while teaming with Thomson in doubles - 8-5 over Clemson’s Alvarez and Juan Bolona, and 8-7 over Georgia Tech’s Gomez and Dean O’Brien.
Georgia Tech Beats Pack: NC State couldn’t build off its win against Clemson, losing to No. 29 Georgia Tech 6-1. Jaime Pulgar was the story of the day, beating No. 5 Guillermo Gomez, 6-4, 6-4.
First ACC Win: The Wolfpack earned its first ACC win of the year with a 5-2 drubbing against No. 33 Clemson. The Pack won the doubles point and four of six singles matches.
Pulgar Moving Up Rankings: Jaime Pulgar entered the ITA singles rankings on Feb. 18. Pulgar, who is now 10-6 moved up 24 spots to No. 70 in the country in the latest singles rankings. A big part of his move was beating No. 5 Guillermo Gomez over the weekend.
Wake Forest Tops Pack: The Pack traveled to Winston-Salem on Wednesday, March 24 and lost to the Demon Deacons 5-2. Rafael Paez and Dave Thomson both recorded wins.
Choboy Earns 100th Victory at State: On Saturday, March 13, the Wolfpack took down No. 53 William & Mary 5-2 to give head coach Jon Choboy his 100th victory at NC State. In his eighth season with the Wolfpack, Choboy has compiled a 104-101 record. Choboy is the only NC State men’s tennis coach to collect at least 20 wins in one season. He’s accomplish the feat twice, winning 20 matches in 2006 and 23 matches in 2007. Before becoming the Pack’s coach in 2003, Choboy had successful stops at Brown and Charleston Southern. In his 15-plus seasons, Choboy’s record is 234-170.
The Importance of the Doubles Point: In college tennis, winning the doubles point goes a long way toward winning the match. For NC State it’s no different. As the season progresses the Wolfpack are 10-1 when winning the doubles point and 3-5 when losing it. Over head coach Jon Choboy’s seven plus seasons in Raleigh, N.C. the Pack are 80-21 when the doubles point is won.
