CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Sophomore Bonae Holston scored a team-high 20 points to send NC State to an important 74-63 victory at North Carolina on Sunday afternoon at Carmichael Arena.
NC State (16-11, 6-6 ACC) won its third-straight game, and second this weekend, behind Holston’s game-high 20, 17 points from ACC Rookie of the Year candidate Marissa Kastanek, 15 from junior reserve Brittany Strachan and 10 from Amber White.
The win streak has pushed NC State into a tie for fifth in the ACC standings with Wake Forest, the Pack's next opponent this Thursday, and one game behind Georgia Tech, who the Wolfpack will end the campaign with next Sunday for Senior Day in Raleigh.
Cetera DeGraffenreid had a game-high 22 points to pace North Carolina (17-9, 5-7 ACC), who lost for the sixth time in the last seven games and is unranked for the first time since 2001. Italee Lucas added 15 points for the Tar Heels.
NC State went scoreless the opening 6:29 of the second half – allowing UNC to build a 44-37 lead. The Pack regained its footing on enemy territory after consecutive buckets by Holston and the team in red was down just three, 45-42, with just under 12 minutes to play.
A three-point play in transition by Lucas put the Tar Heels up 50-42, but once again NC State had an answer by running off 15 straight to take a 57-50 lead. Kastanek ignited the run with a three and Emili Tasler fanned the flames by knocking down two from behind the arc in the run, including one that gave the Pack its first lead since its one-point halftime advantage.
DeGraffenreid put a stop to a long scoring drought for the Heels by hitting a three-pointer with 6:16 left to make it 57-53.
Lucas traded buckets with Holston and it was 61-59 Pack with 3:38 to play.
Out of the final media timeout, NC State made one final push to earn its first win in Chapel Hill since 2004.
A Strachan jumper, another three from Kastanek and a bucket from Holston in a span of 63 seconds put the game out of reach.
Offensive rebounding got UNC up 11-5 early as eight of its first 10 points came off second chances.
The Wolfpack answered with a 14-3 run up 19-14 after White found Kastanek for a beautiful back-door layup from midway through the first half.
The extended run continued for the Pack when Kastanek buried another three and a stick back from Strachan made it 24-16 with 7:52 left until half.
Carolina ran off eight straight to knot it at 24-all, but the resilient Wolfpack scored the next eight, keyed by a pair of three-pointers from Strachan, and it was 32-24.
The runs continued – this time UNC put a 7-2 spurt together to make it 34-31 after two from the free throw line by DeGraffenreid.
Late in the half White’s jump stop in the lane layup sent NC State into the intermission up 37-36.
