TAMPA, Fla. – NC State softball got its first win in four tries over South Florida, 4-0, on Saturday, Feb. 20 in its first game of the day at the La Quinta Inn & Suites Tournament. Claudia Cooper drove in three runs and Lindsay Campana held the Bulls to just four hits.
NC State moves to 5-3 with the win, while USF falls to 5-3.
Campana (3-1) picked up nine K’s and gave up one walk. Brittany Bowles (0-1) took the loss for the Bulls in 4.2 innings of work. Kristen Gordon held the Pack scoreless over the final 2.1 frames.
Cooper capped a three-hit rally in the top of the third to give the Pack a 2-0 advantage. Landon Warren drew a two out walk, and Lauren Peters finished a 12-pitch at-bat by poking a single into shallow left. An Alyssa Allbritten infield single loaded the bases for Cooper, who sent a two-RBI laser back up the middle to put NC State ahead.
Timely hitting resulted in two more runs for the Pack in the top of the fifth. Peters singled and stole second, and Allbritten followed with a walk. Cooper and Stephanie Call then placed back-to-back RBI singles up the middle, forcing USF to lift Bowles and place Gordon in the circle.
NC State will stay on the field to take on Wright State immediately.
