RALEIGH, NC. – Senior Nikitta Gartrell led four NC State double-figure scorers with 20 points in a 73-62 win over Boston College Friday night at Reynolds Coliseum.
With the win, it pulls the Wolfpack to 15 victories for the season, a magic number when it comes time for postseason play. Teams must be .500 to be eligible to play beyond their respective conference tournament.
NC State (15-11, 5-6 ACC) also received 17 points from freshman Marissa Kastanek, 11 from red-shirt junior Amber White and a season-high 10 points off the bench from senior Sharnise Beal.
Beal single-handedly hauled in more offensive rebounds (four) than the entire BC starting five in what can be certainly labeled her best performance of the season.
Stefanie Murphy and Brittanny Johnson each had 15 points to pace Boston College (14-12, 5-6 ACC), while Carolyn Swords added 13 in the loss.
With a 12-point advantage coming out of the intermission, NC State picked right up where it left off in the opening half by getting five quick points from White and the lead grew to a game-high 17 points, 36-19.
The Eagles clawed back into the game with an 18-8 run, capped by a layup by Murphy at the 11:15 mark to make it 44-37.
But the Pack had an answer all night long on offense as Gartrell’s three from the corner put the Pack up 10.
The lead went back down to eight minutes later, but Kastanek bombed away again - this time in transition for a 52-41 lead. The freshman from Lincoln, Neb., was 5-of-6 from three-point land.
NC State’s advantage never dwindled below seven over the final four minutes in winning its second straight and third in the last four games in the month of February.
The Wolfpack got off to a nice start with four buckets from beyond the arc for a 12-2 lead six minutes into the game.
NC State continued to pound the offensive zone, but would leave with empty possessions. However, BC turned the ball over 10 times in the first 10 minutes to allow the lead stay with the Pack.
At the halfway point of the first half, NC State had 22 shot opportunities to the Eagles seven.
White pilfered Jasmine Gill moments later and she took it uncontested the length of the court for a layup and a 20-9 NC State lead with just over six minutes left in the half.
Murphy finally put BC into double figures with a layup at the 3:39 mark, but Kastanek answered at the other end with her third trifecta of the half for a 25-11 lead.
BC cut it down to a 10-point game after a three from Johnson and an old-fashioned three-point play by Swords, but Beal's running putback just before the intermission buzzer sounded gave NC State a 31-19 lead at the break.
The loss snapped Boston College’s win streak at three over the Pack.
The Wolfpack went a perfect 15-for-15 from the free throw line and forced the Eagles into 27 turnovers.
