Bechtholdt Walk-Off Puts Softball Over Providence

MIAMI, Fla. – A Kristine Bechtholdt pinch-hit walk-off bomb handed NC State (1-0) a 4-2 win over Providence (0-3) in its first official game of the season on Saturday, Feb. 13 at the FIU Combat Classic.
The two-run blast is the second walk-off of Bechtholdt’s career and, coincidentally, the first for the Pack since she did it against Winthrop at home on March 26, 2008.
Stephanie Call (1-0) picked up her second career win in as many appearances, striking out five and allowing just six hits. Both of the Friars’ runs were unearned.
Seven NC State players collected hits as the Pack out-hit Providence seven to six. In addition to Bechtholdt, Allison Presnell added an RBI double and two walks, while Krystal Hawkins swiped two bags. Breanna Andrews and Caitlin Dent both picked up hits in their career debuts.
The Pack struck first in the bottom of the fourth, as Call singled and Hawkins took her place on base. Hawkins instantly stole second and third, and sauntered home on an error by Providence catcher Teresa Bertels.
Presnell added another run to the Pack’s lead with a double in the bottom of the fifth, scoring Lauren Peters from first.
The game was one out away from being over when Providence knotted the score at 2-all in the top of the seventh. Katelyn Revens singled through the left side, later scoring when Jenna Garcia reached on an error in right field. Garcia would then score on a Michelle Huber single.
Katie Mansilla immediately started a rally for the Pack in the bottom half of the frame, reaching on a single and stealing second. Head coach Lisa Navas then subbed Bechtholdt for Peters, who celebrated her own birthday by clocking a game-winning shot over the outfield fence.
NC State will immediately return to the field to face North Florida.
