Softball Falls to UIC, 3-1

MIAMI, Fla. – A three-run fifth inning overcame NC State’s lead and led Illinois – Chicago to a 3-1 victory at the FIU Combat Classic on Sunday, Feb. 14. The loss moves the Wolfpack to 2-1 on the year, while the Flames climb to 3-2.
Stephanie Call (1-1) took the loss in two innings of relief following Morgan Peeler’s start. Lindsay Campana also logged an inning of relief. Devin Miller (2-1) got the win for UIC.
Landon Warren gave the Pack a 1-0 lead with an RBI double in the top of the third, bringing in Krystal Hawkins. Bridget Desbois walked to start the frame, with Hawkins taking her place at first. Hawkins then moved to second on an Alicia Abbott sac-bunt before scoring on Warren’s two-bagger.
But the Flames countered with all three of its runs in the bottom of the fifth. Kelsey Sturgeon and Melissa Preish both singled to get things going, each moving up a bag on a Carly DeMarco ground out. Melinda Macias followed with a two-run single, eventually scoring on a Stephanie Chavez sac-fly to right.
NC State will now resume its game against No. 20 UMass, which was halted this past Friday due to rain. The Pack is trailing 1-0 in the bottom of the fourth.
