Henry Leads Track & Field in Season-Opener

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – Sophomore thrower Lawanda Henry won the shot put and was second in the weight throw, leading NC State’s indoor track and field teams in their first competition of the season Sunday at Christopher Newport’s Holiday Open at The Freeman Center.
Henry, a three-time ACC champion in both indoor and outdoor track, easily outdistanced the competition with her throw of 50-feet, 2 ¾-inches, more than eight feet longer than the runner up. Henry was second to teammate Brittany Hampton in the weight throw. Hampton’s winning distance was 56-feet, 8 3/4-inches.
Karimah Shepherd won the triple jump with a leap of 39-feet, 2 ¼-inches. Shepherd also finished third in the long jump at 18-feet, 6 ½-inches, while teammate Ashley Orr was fifth at 17-feet, 9-inches.
The Wolfpack women also took second and third in the women’s high jump, with Lacey Shuman in second with a mark of 5-feet, 5 ¾ inches, followed by Danielle Adams tied for third at 5-feet, 3 ¾ inches.
NC State did not send its distance runners to the meet, and no team scores were kept.
For the men, sophomore Benjamin Major III was third in the 200 meters (22.34 seconds) and sixth in the 60 meters (6.93 seconds).
Kris Kornegay-Gober was second in the high jump with a mark of 6-feet, 9 ¾-inches, followed by Christian Council in sixth. Kwame Boatright was sixth in the long jump. Nathaniel Williams and Grant Pearce finished fifth and sixth, respectively, in the men’s weight throw.
Miles Walker (50.33) and Shawn Murray (50.74) both finished in the top five of the 400 meters, while James Robinson (1:23.36) was third in the 600 meters.
