LONG BEACH, Calif. – California native Kody Burke led five double figure scorers for NC State with her first career double-double in an 86-60 victory over Florida A&M at the Beach Classic held at Walter Pyramid.
Playing less than an hour from her hometown of Northridge, Burke came off the bench to tally 11 points and a career-high 13 rebounds. Bonae Holston had a team-leading 15 points, while freshman Myisha Goodwin-Coleman scored a career-high 14 points to lead a 43-point bench scoring performance, far-and-away a season best.
Breezy Williams and Marissa Kastanek rounded out the balanced attack with 12 and 11 points, respectively, as NC State shot 51.5 percent from the field, and finished with a season-high 86 points.
Tameka McKelton led the Rattlers with 17 points on six of 20 shooting. Nicole Collins added 11.
Leading by 13 out of the halftime break, NC State made sure it was going to be a comfortable evening by going on a 13-5 run in the first five minutes of the second half to lead by 21, 50-29.
It was cruise control from that point on. The Pack made seven second-half three-pointers, and a season-high 10 from beyond the arc.
Lightly-used reserve guard Kim Durham also notched a career-high nine points in her third season with the Wolfpack.
The lead grew all the way to a 35-point advantage after a bucket from Williams with just under four minutes to play.
NC State moves back to .500 for the first time since starting 2-2 early in November. Florida A&M falls to 3-5.
The Wolfpack made five of its first eight shots to take an 11-5 lead after a 3-pointer from Kastanek.
Florida A&M knotted the game 14-all midway through the first half, but consecutive buckets from Williams and Devin Griffin gave the Pack an 18-14 advantage.
McKelton’s three-point play cut FAMU’s deficit to 18-17, but NC State ran off a 10-2 spurt to move out to a 28-19 advantage after Durham drained a three with 3:31 until intermission.
The run extended out to a 19-7 advantage for NC State to close out the first half with a 37-24 lead. Holston, with 12 points, led the Pack in the opening half as the club shot 48.4 percent from the field.
McKelton led all scorers with 13 at the half, but she was the lone bright spot as the Rattlers shot less than 28 percent going into halftime.
NC State takes on host Long Beach State Tuesday in the final day of the Beach Classic. The game is scheduled for 8 p.m. ET, and can be heard in Raleigh on 88.1 FM WKNC and online at GoPack.com.
