RALEIGH, N.C. - Led by Bonae Holston’s 23 points on 11-of-17 shooting and Kody Burke’s 12 point, 11 rebound double-double, NC State ran away from North Greenville 91-35 Sunday in exhibition play at Reynolds Coliseum.
“I think that’s a good start for us,” said NC State head coach Kellie Harper. “The kids were anxious to get a game under their belt and get in front of a crowd. I think we’ve got some things to work on, but that’s what you expect, and that’s what these exhibition games give you.”
Holston also contributed eight rebounds in only 15 minutes of play. Lakeesa Daniel led the Wolfpack in rebounds with 12, and Amber White dished out seven assists to pace NC State.
As a team, the Wolfpack combined to shoot 50% from the field on 39-of-78 shooting, scored 30 points from the bench, and 30 off of 24 North Greenville turnovers.
NC State dominated inside, scoring 60 of the 91 points in the paint. The Wolfpack outrebounded North Greenville 72-24. Of NC State’s 72 rebounds, 30 came on the offensive glass leading to 20 second-chance points on the afternoon.
Krisceda Cotton and Brooks Walz led North Greenville in scoring with six points each, as NC State’s defense denied any scorers in double figures, and limited the Crusaders to 22% shooting.
“I’m really excited about Kody, she’s very intelligent for a freshman,” said Harper. “She picks up things quickly and that speeds up the process that most players have to go through in our system.”
NC State opened the game on an 8-0 run paced by four points and four rebounds from Holston in the first three minutes. The Wolfpack extended that lead to 16-2 with 13:53 to go in the first half, capped by a fastbreak layup from Breezy Williams.
North Greenville closed the deficit to 10, 16-6 with 12:18 remaining, before NC State went on a 14-0 run. The Wolfpack defense subjected the Crusaders to a seven and a half minute scoring drought over the course of the run.
NC State held North Greenville to 18.5% from the field on 5-of-27 shooting in the first half to take a 44-12 lead into the locker room.
With the exhibition behind them, NC State now looks toward the season-opening November 12 matchup with College of Charleston at Reynolds Coliseum, part of the Sheraton Raleigh Wolfpack Invitational.
NC State’s game against the Cougarsn will tip at noon and will be a part of “Education Day with the Pack”. The women’s basketball program and the Athletic Department will welcome more than 800 elementary school children from Johnston County.
