RALEIGH, N.C. ­— The weather outside was frightful, but cross country runners from six schools plus several unattached athletes showed up Saturday at the Wake Med Soccer and Cross Country Complex in Cary to compete in the Pack Invitational.
Duke won both team races in cold rain and wind, sweeping the men’s race with 15 points to 50 for Elon, the only other school to field a full squad for the race. The Blue Devils won the three-squad women’s race with a score of 30, followed by Elon with 43 points and NC State with 53.
Duke’s Domenick DeMattio won the 5k men’s race in a time of 14:53. Laura Paulsen, a Duke runner competing unattached, won the 5k women’s race in a time of 17:49.
For NC State, Adam Henken, running unattached, finished second overall in the men’s race in a time of 15:01. Michael Mansy, also running unattached, was fifth at 15:09. Thomas Petersen was seventh at 15:25, followed by John Sharpe (8th, unattached, at 15:26) and Bryan Spreitzer (9th, unattached, at 15:28).
In the women’s race, Tiayonna Blackmon and Samantha Norman, both unattached, finished third and fourth, respectively, Blackmon at 17:57 and Norman at 18:05. Kenyetta Iyevbele, also unattached, was seventh at 18:15. Leah Vaughn was the first NC State runner competing attached to cross the finish line, taking 11th at 18:48.
