CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -
NC State’s Dave Thomson racked up two more wins to move into the semifinals of the ITA Carolinas Regional on Sunday, Oct. 17. Jaime Pulgar added a win as well, giving him three for his stay at the tournament.
Thomson topped Campbell’s Davy Sum, 6-3, 6-3, to get start in the round of 16. He then dismissed No. 36 Tripp Carleton, Wake Forest’s No. 1 singles option, 6-1, 6-3, for his second win against a ranked opponent in as many days.
“I really proud of the effort that Dave is giving,” said head coach Jon Choboy. “He’s really playing with a lot of poise and he is showing what he is capable of doing. He’s racked up some wins against really good competition this weekend, and he is going to try to keep it going moving forward.”
Thomson has now won five matches over the last three days.
Pulgar, ranked No. 44 nationally, played the No. 1 option at both UNC Greensboro and North Carolina. He defeated Orcun Seyrek, 6-2, 6-2, in the round of 16, before falling to No. 64 Stefan Hardy, 7-5, 6-3.
“Jaime had a solid run for us,” said Choboy. “He had some matches against really stiff competition and made it very far in the field.”
Thomson will resume play tomorrow, Monday, Oct. 18, in the semifinals on the last day of the ITA Carolinas Regional against an opponent still to be determined. One win will move him into the final bout, also scheduled for tomorrow.
