Singles Action Begins at ITA Carolinas

Four NC State men’s tennis players picked up wins in the first round of singles play at the ITA Carolinas Regional on Friday, Oct. 15. Rob Lowe, Julian Sullivan, Dave Thomson and Akash Gujarati all earned victories in straight sets.
Fourth-seeded Jaime Pulgar and 10th-seeded Dominic Hodgson both received byes in the opening round.
Lowe topped James Atkinson of The Citadel, 7-6, 6-1, while Sullivan beat out South Carolina’s Harry Menzies, 6-4, 6-2. Dave Thomson defeated Chanon Varapongsittikul from UNC Greensboro, 6-2, 6-2, as Gujarati trumped South Carolina’s Christopher Sheehan, 6-3, 6-2.
Sean Weber, Rafael Paez, David Chermak and Ivan Sanchez Gomez all fell in singles, while Pulgar and Sanchez Gomez lost in the third round of doubles action, 8-2, to Duke’s Reid Carleton and Henrique Cunha.
Play will continue tomorrow, Saturday, Oct. 16, at the ITA Carolinas Regional.
