CLEMSON, S.C. – NC State could not overcome a miserable shooting afternoon Sunday in a 69-56 loss to Clemson at Littlejohn Coliseum.
NC State (12-10, 2-5 ACC) shot a season-low 25.0 percent from the field to fall for the third-straight outing, while Clemson (11-12, 2-5 ACC) won its second game of the weekend after losing eight straight.
Amber White and Nikitta Gartrell led the Wolfpack with 13 points each, while Bonae Holston had 12.
The Wolfpack did a nice job of keeping Clemson’s leading scorer Lele Hardy (11 points) off the scoreboard for over 29 minutes, but when she finally found the scoring column she scored seven points over a crucial 9-0 run that broke a 40-all tie.
The Pack never got closer than five points over the final 6:05.
Clemson benefited from a balance attack that saw five players score in double figures – led by 12 each from Bryelle Smith and Shaniqua Pauldo.
NC State kept itself close for the most of the game by shooting an efficient 81.5 percent from the free throw line on 22-of-27 shooting.
The Wolfpack took its first lead of the game 15-14 after consecutive baskets by Holston midway through the first half.
The shots weren’t falling for the visitors, but the Pack was able to get to the foul line and make 7-of-9 attempts from the stripe in the early portion of the game to keep pace with Clemson, who led by six in the opening minutes.
The Tigers inched back to a 24-19 advantage after back-to-back layups by Lindsey Mason, but two more from the line by White knotted it 24-all with 2:28 left until halftime.
Smith unlocked the tie with Clemson’s only three-pointer of the first half and that propelled the home team to go into intermission up 30-26.
NC State returns home next Sunday to host Virginia Tech at 4 p.m.
