CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Bonae Holston and Nikitta Gartrell combined for 37 points for NC State, but No. 21 Virginia’s Monica Wright offset that with 26 points in a 73-60 victory for the Cavaliers Wednesday night at John Paul Jones Arena.
NC State (12-9, 2-4 ACC) clawed back to within three points with less than six minutes to play, but back-to-back three-pointers by UVa’s Whitney Edwards proved to much to overcome for the Wolfpack.
Holston paced NC State with 20 points, while Gartrell added 17.
Virginia (15-5, 4-2 ACC) opened up a 51-41 lead by running off nine-straight points to break open what was a one-point game after an Emili Tasler three-pointer with 12:50 left.
A Wright jumper from the baseline capped the run midway through the second half for the Cavaliers.
The Wolfpack put together one last run by scoring 10 of the next 13 to get within three after a pair of free throws by Gartrell with 5:50 to play.
But, as mentioned earlier, that setup Edwards pair from beyond the arc. NC State never got back within seven points over the final five minutes.
Wright, the National Player of the Year candidate and Virginia’s all-time leading scorer had her 13th 20-point effort in the victory. Lexie Gerson had 11 points, while Chelsea Shine and Edwards each tossed in 10.
The Wolfpack used a 15-2 run in the first half to erase an early five-point deficit to take a 20-12 lead with 7:06 left until halftime.
NC State was able to keep Virginia off the scoreboard for 5:28 to key the extended run.
UVa responds with 10 straight points to re-take a 22-20 lead, but Brittany Strachan drained a second-chance three-ball for a 23-22 lead with 3:35 left until halftime.
With the game tied in the final moments of the first half, Gartrell stepped into her second trifecta of the half to send the Wolfpack into intermission with a 29-26 lead.
Despite 15 turnovers in the opening stanza the Pack still held the halftime advantage as Gartrell had nine points, while Holston had eight. A 22-10 rebounding edge certainly helped the cause.
