CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – NC State had its four-game winning streak snapped at the hands of Boston College, 83-66, Sunday afternoon at Conte Forum.
A 19-6 Wolfpack run that covered portions of both halves cut its deficit to 45-43, but in the end a disappointing start that saw NC State fall behind by 15 points was too much to overcome.
Bonae Holston led NC State (11-6, 1-1 ACC) with 19 points, while Nikitta Gartrell and Tia Bell added 15 and 10 points respectively.
Mickel Picco scored 17 of her game-high 21 points in the first half to pace Boston College (10-6, 1-0 ACC). Brittanny Johnson tossed in a career-high 19 points and Carolyn Swords had 17 points and 16 rebounds.
After the extended run by the Pack, the Eagles seemed to have an answer whenever the visitors seemed to close in.
Holston scored four consecutive buckets to make it 63-59 in favor of BC, but a quick 10-3 spurt by the Eagles left them up 11, 73-62 with 3:22 left.
It was all BC the rest of the way as a late three-pointer by Johnson topped of her career day that saw her score seven more points than she ever had before for the senior.
BC secured the win by going 24-of-25 from the free throw line, paced by Johnson’s perfect 10-of-10 performance.
Picco and Swords were a deadly combination in the first half, combining for 27 points before intermission.
Boston College got the better of it in the opening minutes – leaping out to an 18-6 advantage as Picco had 12 points in the early going.
Still trailing by a healthy margin of 39-24, the Pack finally got things rolling by putting together an 11-4 run to close the half.
A three-point play by Gartrell left it 41-29 in favor of BC with 3:23 until halftime.
A three by Marissa Kastanek made it 41-32 and later Holston continued the trend with a three-point play of her own and it was down to a 43-35 BC lead with just over two minutes left.
The Pack missed on two good scoring opportunities in the final moments, but considering it was a double-digit deficit most of the first half, the Pack trailed just 43-35 at the half.
BC, coming off a game shooting 58.7 percent against Dartmouth, continued its trend by converting nearly 55 percent of its shots in scoring a season-high 43 first-half points.
BC has won three straight in the series and now leads 5-4 all-time over the Pack.
