Wilmington, N.C. - Two members of the NC State women's tennis team completed the first day of competition at the Landfall Invitational hosted by UNC-Wilmington. The tournament began on Friday, Sept. 11 with doubles matches, followed by singles matches. Competition will continue tomorrow, and conclude on Sunday, Sept. 13.
To begin the day, sophomore Diana Mortlock teamed up with freshman Chloe Smith to defeat Brooke Mosteller and Susan Bitetti of Furman, 8-0. Following their victory, Mortlock and Smith played against Erin Wilbert and Sarah Lazarevic of Kansas, but fell short 8-3.
Moving on to singles competition, Mortlock lost to Victoria Sekley of Georgetown 2-6, 7-5, 10-7.
Perhaps the biggest story of the day though was Smith. In her first singles competition at NC State, she defeated nationally ranked #109 Lindsay Leblang of UNCW, 6-4, 7-6 (4). Both Mortlock and Smith will play again tomorrow.
