RALEIGH, N.C. Third-seeded North Carolina took down sixth-seeded NC State, 3-1, in the opening game of the 2009 ACC Championships at the Curtis & Jacqueline Dail Softball Stadium on Friday, May 8. The loss ends the Pack’s season at 23-25, while the 14th-ranked Tar Heels climb to 45-10.
Lindsay Campana (13-11) got hit with the loss. Danielle Spaulding (20-3) fanned 16 in 5.2 frames of work en route to earning the win and Lisa Norris picked up her fourth save of the year.
Alyssa Ishibashi led State at the plate with a 2-for-4 performance, while Alyssa Allbritten clubbed her fifth home run.
Brittany McKinney put the Tar Heels up with a two-out two-run single to left in the bottom of the third. Campana walked the first two batters in the inning, and a Breanna Brown sac-bunt put runners on second and third before McKinney drove them in.
Allbritten cut the score in half, 2-1, with a solo blast to left-center to start the bottom of the fourth. State would put two more on base as Claudia Cooper singled to center and Allison Presnell drew a walk, but the Pack couldn’t manufacture any more scoring.
North Carolina tacked on a run to make it 3-1 in the bottom of the fifth. Brown lead off with a double to left-center, later coming around to score on an Emily Troup base hit into right-center.
The Pack had a chance to do some serious damage with the bases loaded in the top of the sixth. Allbritten reached when Constance Orr muffed a throw at first base, and Cooper and Presnell both picked up free passes. That scoring opportunity went unrealized however as Lisa Norris caught Toni Ann Williford swinging to end the inning.
