RALEIGH, N.C. Senior Jay Weinacker and freshman Jaime Pulgar of the NC State men’s tennis team earned ITA Mideast Region Awards for NCAA Division I following impressive seasons by both players. Weinacker won the 2009 ITA/Arthur Ashe Mideast Region award, and Pulgar earned his first award with the Wolfpack after being named ITA Rookie Player of the Year for the Mideast Region. Both are now one of eight finalists for each national award.
The ITA/Arthur Ashe Award for Leadership and Sportsmanship goes to a player who has shown outstanding sportsmanship and leadership, and has had scholastic, extracurricular, and tennis achievements. This is the second straight year Weinacker has earned the Arthur Ashe Award. Off the courts, Weinacker has been Academic All-ACC one time, and also earned Dean’s list honors four times. He has served as the men’s tennis representative to the Student Athlete Advisory Committee for the past three years.
Weinacker had an impressive senior year on the courts as well, breaking multiple NC State records, and earning a bid to the NCAA Individual Championships in College Station, Texas on May 20th. Weinacker, who is ranked 36th in the nation, currently has 104 career singles wins, the most in program history, and also has 87 doubles victories, tied for first in NC State history. This season, Weinacker and Pulgar had 18 doubles victories, only the second pair in Pack history to reach that mark. Weinacker, who has served as team captain for two years, earned All-ACC honors for the second straight year as a senior.
Pulgar earned Mideast Rookie Player of the Year honors after going 15-9 in spring singles, playing at both the No. 3 and No. 4 spots. Twelve of his singles wins were over players from ranked teams. Pulgar was instrumental in helping the Pack advance to the quarterfinals of the ACC tournament, winning both his doubles and singles matches, and he also won his singles bout in the second round of the tournament. Earlier in the season, he was ranked No. 38 in doubles with Weinacker.
