RALEIGH, N.C. A seventh-inning rally fell just short for the NC State softball team in a 2-1 loss to No. 15 North Carolina on Sunday, April 5, at the Curtis & Jacqueline Dail Softball Stadium.
The loss moves the Pack to 18-16 (3-6 ACC) on the year, while UNC escalates to 34-7 (10-2 ACC).
Mendy McKenzie (7-7) got hit with the loss, allowing one earned run. Lindsay Campana tossed two innings in relief, giving up one hit. Both pitchers allowed just four hits combined, as the Wolfpack out-hit the Tar Heels 5-to-4.
Lisa Norris (16-4) got the win in relief for UNC, as Danielle Spaulding hurled the first three frames.
A Bridget Desbois single through the left side put State up 1-0 in the bottom of the third. Eliza Jacobellis took first on a Constance Orr miscue at first and a pitch hit Alyssa Ishibashi before Desbois squeezed one between short and third to bring Jacobellis across the plate.
Back-to-back doubles from Whitney Allen and Spaulding tied the game in the top of the fourth, but the Tar Heels took over at 2-1 when the throw to first on an Anna Roberts grounder was off target allowing another UNC run to come in.
Norris took over the circle for North Carolina in the bottom of the fourth, retiring the side in order.
The Pack threatened in the bottom of the fifth as Hannah Ojeda doubled to left, but Allen was able to reel in an Ishibashi fly ball to the warning track in left for the third out.
State loaded the bases in the bottom of the seventh, but just couldn’t produce a run. Allison Presnell led off with an infield single to second, later taking second on a one-out bunt single from Jacobellis towards short. Ishibashi walked to load the bases, but Allbritten popped up to short to end the game.
NC State will host Charlotte at the Curtis & Jacqueline Dail Softball Stadium for two games this coming Tuesday, April 7. Game one is set to begin at 4 p.m., with the second contest following shortly thereafter. GoPack.com will provide live stats for both bouts.
