No. 48 Men's Tennis Falls to No. 31 Miami

RALEIGH, N.C. - The No. 48 NC State men's tennis team fell, 4-3, to No. 31 Miami on Friday, April 3, in Raleigh, N.C. at the JW Isenhour Tennis Center. The Pack won three singles matches, but the Hurricanes' doubles point victory edged the team out for the win. With the loss, NC State falls to 9-11 (3-5 ACC), and Miami improves to 10-7 (6-2 ACC).
The Hurricanes earned the doubles point after winning at the first and third doubles spots. The 61st-ranked pair of Daniel Vallverdu and David Rosenfeld defeated senior Christian Welte and redshirt freshman Julian Sullivan, 8-4, at the top doubles spot. Senior Jay Weinacker and freshman Jaime Pulgar continued their winning streak at No. 2 doubles to five wins after taking down Keith Crowley and Carl Sundberg, 8-6, at No. 2.
With the doubles point on the line, and the first two matches split, the early point came down to the No. 3 doubles team. Sophomore Rob Lowe and freshman Justin Jendruch were up 7-2 before Christian Blocker and David Simon rallied back to take the match, 9-7.
Pulgar started out the singles matches with a swift 6-1, 7-6(2) victory at the No. 4 spot over David Simon. Nationally ranked 36th Weinacker fell to 15th-ranked Vallverdu, 6-4, 6-2, at the top singles spot.
Senior Derek Stephens tied up the team score, 2-2, with a straight set victory over Blocker, 7-6(5), 7-5, at No. 3. Sullivan fell to No. 120 Carl Sundberg, 6-4, 6-4, at the fifth singles spot.
No. 118 Welte won his first set, but fell in his second, sending the match to a full third set since a team had not earned the win yet. Welte battled strong in the third to defeat Rosenfeld, 7-6(5), 3-6, 6-4, at the second singles spot.
The match victory came down to the sixth singles spot. Crowley defeated sophomore David Chermak for the win, 6-2, 7-6.
The Pack will be in action again on Sunday, April 5 as NC State faces No. 16 Florida State in Raleigh, N.C. at the JW Isenhour Tennis Center.
