No. 29 Virginia Defeats Women's Tennis

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - The NC State women's tennis team fell, 5-2, to No. 29 Virginia on Sunday, April 12, in Charlottesville, Va. Sophomore Lenka Hojckova and junior Berkeley Brock both won their singles matches over higher-ranked opponents. The loss sends the Pack to 4-17 (1-10 ACC) on the season.
The Cavaliers swept all three doubles matches to earn the early lead. Lindsey Hardenbergh and Neela Vaez defeated sophomore Jackie Ussery and freshman Pender Sessoms, 8-2, at No. 3 doubles. Hojkcova and junior Daria Petrovic fell to the 42nd-ranked pair, Emily Fraser and Jennifer Stevens, 8-2, at the top doubles spot. Amanda Rales and Maggie Yahner defeated Brock and senior Neils Barringer, 8-3, at No. 2.
Sessoms fell to Yahner, 6-1, 6-0, at No. 5, and Ussery lost to Vaez, 6-0, 6-2, at No. 6. Hardenbergh secured the win for Virginia with a 6-3, 6-0, at No. 4 singles.
Hojckova, who is ranked 104th in the nation, beat the 79th-ranked player, Fraser, 6-1, 7-5, at the top singles spot, and No. 113 Brock took down No. 88 Stevens in the third set, 7-5, 4-6, 1-0(10-4), at No. 2 singles. Rales defeated Petrovic, 7-5, 7-6(2), at No. 3.
The Pack will compete on Thursday in the ACC Tournament in Cary, N.C.
