No. 51 Men's Tennis Falls to Top-Ranked VIrginia

RALEIGH, N.C. - Senior Jay Weinacker earned his 104th career singles victory on Saturday, April 11, in the No. 51 NC State men's tennis team's final regular season match. The Pack fell, 6-1, to top-ranked Virginia in Raleigh, N.C. at the JW Isenhour Tennis Center. NC State falls to 9-14 (3-8 ACC), and the Cavaliers remain undefeated on the season with a 26-0 (11-0 ACC) record.
Virginia swept all three doubles matches to take the 1-0 lead going into the singles portion of the contest. Drew Courtney and Lee Singer defeated sophomore Rob Lowe and redshirt freshman Julian Sullivan, 8-4, at No. 3 doubles, and freshmen Justin Jendruch and Jaime Pulgar lost to Sanam Singh and Houston Barrick, the 6th-ranked doubles team in the nation, 8-2, at No. 2.
Seniors Weinacker and Christian Welte battled into a tie-break, but fell 9-8(3), to Dominic Inglot and Michael Shabaz, at the top doubles spot.
Freshman Akash Gujarati fell to 82nd-ranked Singer, 6-0, 6-0, at No. 6 singles.
Weinacker, who is ranked 36th nationally, improved his ACC singles record to 7-4, with a decisive straight set, 6-1, 6-4, victory over 17th-ranked Inglot, at the top singles spot to score the Pack's lone point of the match.
Senior Derek Stephens fell to 20th-ranked Shabaz, 6-2, 6-3, at No. 3, and Courtney secured the Cavaliers win by defeated Sullivan, 6-1, 7-6(1), at No. 5.
Welte fell to Singh, 7-5, 6-0, at No. 2, and Pulgar played into a third set, but fell 6-1, 4-6, 6-0, at No. 4.
NC State will next compete in the ACC Championships in Cary, N.C. on Thursday, April 16th.
