Holston Stars In Classroom Too

GREENSBORO, N.C. NC State's Bonae Holston has been selected to the 2008-09 ACC Women’s Basketball All-Academic Team. This marked one of four awards she was given last week from the league office.
Holston was named the ACC Rookie of the Week on Monday, was selected to the All-Freshman team on Tuesday and was honored with the 6th Player of the Year award on Wednesday.
A 5-foot-11 forward from Newport News, Va., Holston averaged 9.6 points and 5.7 rebounds in playing all 30 Wolfpack games.
She was very productive in ACC games, by averaging 12.8 points and 7.4 rebounds in conference play. Both figures lead all ACC rookies in league games only. In addition, she has scored in double figures in nine of 14 ACC games and scored 20 or more points three times.
Holston earned her second ACC Rookie of the Week honor yesterday after averaging 17.0 points, 9.3 rebounds, 2.7 steals and one block in three games during the final week of the regular season.
NC State (13-17) had its season come to an end with a 59-54 loss to Wake Forest in the ACC Tournament.
Additionally, Virginia Tech senior Laura Haskins has been named the recipient of the inaugural Kay Yow award as the ACC Women's Basketball Scholar-Athlete of the Year.
Haskins, the Hokies’ starting point guard and team leader, is currently enrolled in Virginia Tech’s MBA program. Haskins finished her undergraduate work in only three years and with a ranking of first among 129 students in her business management major and seventh out of 942 in Virginia Tech’s Pamplin College of Business. Haskins earned the Paul Hammelmann Award, given to the highest ranking graduating student in the Pamplin College of Business.
A four-time member of the All-ACC Academic Team and a multi-time Dean’s List student, Haskins has also found time to make major contributions on the basketball court. Haskins ranks fourth in the ACC in assists this season and ranks among Virginia Tech’s top 10 all-time leaders in that category. The Alexandria, Va., native ranks third on her team in rebounds.
ACC Scholar-Athlete of the Year awards were established in September 2007 to be awarded annually to the top junior or senior student-athlete in their respective sports. Candidates for the awards must have maintained a 3.0 grade point average for their career as well as a 3.0 for each of the last two semesters. The award is based 60 percent on academic achievement and 40 percent on athletic accomplishment.
To be eligible for consideration for the academic squad, a student-athlete must have earned a 3.00 grade point average for the previous semester and maintained a 3.00 cumulative average during her academic career.
