RALEIGH, N.C. - Senior Christian Welte and redshirt freshman Julian Sullivan shocked the top-ranked doubles pair in the nation, Cory Parr and Steve Forman, in the No. 48 NC State men's tennis team's loss to No. 48 Wake Forest. The Pack lost 5-2 on Tuesday, March 31 in Raleigh, N.C. after winning the doubles point, but only one singles match. The loss sends NC State to 9-10 (3-4 ACC) and the Demon Deacons improve to 15-6 (5-1 ACC).
Senior Jay Weinacker and freshman Jaime Pulgar swiftly defeated Iain Atkinson and Carlos Salmon, 8-4, at the No. 2 doubles spot to start the match. Sophomore Rob Lowe and freshman Justin Jendruch fell, 8-4, at No. 3 doubles to Jonathan Wolff and Jason Morgenstern to split the doubles matches.
With the doubles point on the line, it was up to Welte and Sullivan to earn the Pack an early lead. After trading games with the top-ranked doubles duo in the nation, Parr and Forman, the NC State duo was up 6-5. The Pack then took control of the match and won the last two games to hand the Demon Deacon pair their third loss of the season, and the first ACC doubles match loss for the duo.
The Demon Deacons went on to win five singles matches to earn the victory over NC State.
