RALEIGH, N.C. - NC State will finally open the ACC portion of its schedule this weekend at home against Virginia, March 21-22, at the Curtis & Jacqueline Dail Softball Stadium. The Pack and Cavaliers will play two games on Saturday beginning at 1 p.m., before bringing the series to a close on Sunday with a 12 noon first pitch. GoPack.com will carry live stats for all three games, while ACC Select will offer a live online broadcast of Sunday’s contest.
State (11-9) played two home midweek games this week, falling to East Carolina on Wednesday and rebounding against Fordham on Thursday. The Pack’s battle with the Pirates was locked in a pitcher’s dual and knotted at a scoreless tie until ECU erupted for five runs in the top of the 10th to win in extra innings. An offensive awakening, coupled with spotty pitching control and defense at times on Fordham’s behalf, helped the Wolfpack bounce back to a 6-4 victory on Thursday.
Hannah Ojeda’s .341 batting average is tops on the squad, while Alyssa Ishibashi is batting .296. Kristine Bechtholdt, Bridget Desbois and Allison Presnell each have three home runs and 10 RBIs.
The Wolfpack pitching staff has been solid by and large, combining for a 1.73 ERA. Lindsay Campana (5-4, 1 save) posts a 1.28 ERA on her own with six complete games under her belt and 70 strikeouts. McKenzie (4-3, 1 save) carries a 2.29 ERA with 46 K’s. Morgan Peeler (1-2, 2.71 ERA) and Stephanie Call (1-0, 2.00 ERA) have also shown tremendous promise when handed the ball in the circle.
Scouting Virginia
Virginia (17-5) will open its ACC schedule against the Pack while riding a 10-game winning streak, its best run since the 2001 season. A year ago the Cavaliers won just 15 total games.
Sarah Tacke and Nicole Koren pace UVa at the plate, each owning eight home runs and a .475 batting clip. Tacke, currently enjoying a nine-game hitting streak, leads the ACC with 33 RBIs on the year.
Four Cavalier pitchers have combined for a 1.96 ERA, with Karla Wilburn leading the way on a 12-1 record with a 1.64 ERA and 64 strikeouts.
The All-Time Series
NC State is 9-8 all-time against Virginia. State has won eight of the last 11 meetings despite dropping two of three last year in Charlottesville, Va.
State in ACC Openers
Head coach Lisa Navas’ Wolfpack program is 4-1 all-time in ACC opening games. State won its first ever ACC game against arch rival North Carolina in Chapel Hill (5-2) in 2004, and has won three straight over Boston College (6-5, 2006), Florida State (6-3, 2007) and Boston College (8-0, 2008). Its lone loss came at the hands of Florida State (2-5) in 2005.
