GREENSBORO, N.C. NC State senior guard Shayla Fields was named to the 2009 All-Atlantic Coast Conference second team, announced Monday by the league office.
Fields has ranked among the ACC’s leaders in a variety of statistical categories all season long and a panel of media members and the league’s 12 head coaches recognized her efforts today.
The Salisbury, N.C., native is third in the ACC in scoring at 17.5 points per game the highest average at NC State in 10 years. Fields also ranks fourth in assist/turnover ratio (1.3), sixth in three-pointer per game (1.9), eighth in assists (3.4), 10th in steals (2.1) and 12th in free throw shooting (73.8).
She also leads the ACC in minutes played for the second straight season. Her 38.7 per game average is impressive, but in league play it jumps to a staggering 40.4 minutes per game after the Wolfpack have played three overtime games in 2009.
Fields ranks 44th nationally in scoring and that is primarily thanks to her reaching the 20-point plateau 10 times this year, including a career-best 33 points against Charlotte on Feb. 16 in the opening weekend of the season.
She became the 25th player in school history to reach 1,000 points in her career against Ole Miss on Dec. 14 and has risen to No. 18 on the scoring chart at 1,340. Fields also stands fourth in three-pointers made (161), career three-point shooting percentage (33.1) and career free throw shooting percentage (75.5).
The Wolfpack (13-16) will play ninth-seeded Wake Forst (18-10) on Thursday at 3 p.m., in the pending ACC Tournament. The game will be broadcast live on the league’s regional television package (RSN). The two teams tied with a 5-9-league slate, but NC State swept both regular seasons meetings - a 59-51 victory in Raleigh on February 12 and a 65-63 overtime win in Winston-Salem on February 17.
The winner of Thursday's game will move on to face No. 1 seed Maryland at 3 p.m., on Friday and will also be televised on RSN.
NC State has won all three previous games against Wake Forest in the ACC Tournament, but the two teams haven't met since 1991 when the tournament was held in Fayetteville, N.C.
The 32nd Annual tournament is set to tip-off at approximately 11 a.m. ET on Thursday, March 5, and will conclude with a 1 p.m. championship contest on Sunday, March 8. The title game as well as the semifinals showings will be broadcast by Fox Sports Net (FSN), while the 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. games on Thursday, March 5, and Friday, March 6, will be televised on RSN.
Tickets are available and may be obtained by calling the Wolfpack ticket office at (919) 865-1510. NC State fans that want to sit in the team's designated section must call the Wolfpack ticket office number.
