No. 42 Men's Tennis Falls to No. 28 Duke

DURHAM, N.C. - The No. 42 NC State men's tennis team fell to No. 28 Duke on Wednesday, March 18 in Durham, N.C. The Pack lost the doubles point that came down to the wire, and senior Jay Weinacker and freshman Akash Gujarati each won their singles matches. The Blue Devils improve to 8-3 (1-0 ACC) on the season, and NC State falls to 7-7 (1-1 ACC).
Senior Christian Welte and redshirt freshman Julian Sullivan defeated Dylan Arnould and Reid Carleton, 8-4, at the No. 2 doubles spot. Freshman Justin Jendruch and sophomore Rob Lowe fell, 8-4, at No. 3 doubles to David Holland and Jared Pinsky, leaving the doubles point up to the No. 1 doubles team. Weinacker and freshman Jaime Pulgar, who are ranked No. 79 in the nation, battled to an 8-8 tie, before falling in the final tie-break game to Kiril Dimitov and Alan Michel, at No. 1.
No. 65 Weinacker started out singles play with a swift victory over higher-ranked, No. 28 Reid Carleton, 6-2, 6-2, at No. 1, his 99th career singles win. Pinsky earned Duke's first singles point with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Sullivan at No. 4.
Sophomore David Chermak fell to Luke Marchese, 6-3, 6-2, at No. 5, and freshman Akash Gujarati notched his first ACC win by defeating Holland, 7-5, 6-3, at No. 6.
Arnould secured the win for the Blue Devils after battling Pulgar into a third set, and came out on top, 4-6, 6-3, 7-5, at No. 3. No. 58 Dimitov defeated No. 96 Welte, 4-6, 6-3, 7-5, at No. 2, to round out the match.
The Pack will hit the road again on Friday to take on Boston College, and then will face Maryland on Sunday, March 22.
