CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. Boston College squeezed by NC State with a 58-52 victory Sunday afternoon on the final day of the regular season at Conte Forum.
Shayla Fields led NC State (13-16, 5-9 ACC) with 14 points and five assists, while Bonae Holston and Tia Bell tossed in 12 points and 10 points respectively for the Pack. Hoston also hauled in 11 boards for her fifth double-double of the conference season.
Boston College’s front line of Stephanie Murphy and Carolyn Swords was dominant down low once again in the second meeting between the two schools this season. Murphy had 15 points and eight rebounds, while Swords had 14 points and nine caroms. Mickel Pico added 12 points on four three-pointers.
With NC State trailing 28-25 at halftime, it was anyone’s ballgame with 20 minutes to play, but Boston College (19-10, 7-7 ACC) hung tough the entire second half by never relinquishing its lead.
Gartrell tied it up, 33-all early on, but Picco drilled consecutive three-pointers to give the advantage back to the Eagles.
Gartrell later canned back-to-back jumpers to get the Pack within one, 47-46, with just over seven minutes to play.
In the closing minutes and trailing 54-50, Fields had a good look from beyond the arc, but front ironed the shot and BC hauled in the rebound.
Victoria Jones sealed the win with two free throws in the final minute for the Eagle win.
After a brief 6-0 Boston College run for a 13-7 lead, the Wolfpack held strong on defense the next seven minutes by forcing six turnovers to get right back in the game and take a 14-13 lead after a jumper on the wing by Tia Bell.
With the game tied 20-all, BC put together an 8-0 spurt to take its largest lead of the first half with over two minutes until halftime, but a put-back bucket by Hanna Halteman and a three-pointer in the corner from Kristy Kenney sent the game into intermission with the Pack down just three, 28-25.
BC shot an efficient 54.5-percent in the first half, but turned the ball over 12 times and the Pack scored 10 points off those miscues. NC State helped its cause with just three giveaways in the first half.
Eagles have lost six of seven since defeating NC State 62-51 back on January 29, the first game the Wolfpack took the court after the passing of head coach Kay Yow.
Pending the outcome of the Wake Forest-Florida State game, NC State or Wake will either be the No. 8 or 9 seed in the ACC Tournament in Greensboro, N.C. The game will commence Thursday at 3 p.m., and will be broadcast on the Regional Sports Network, which includes Fox Sports Carolinas in North and South Carolina.
