Call, Pack Slide Past Indiana, 3-2

HOUSTON, Texas Stephanie Call (1-0) struck out 10 and won her pitching debut as NC State topped Indiana, 3-2, in its final game at the Marriott Houston Classic on Sunday, Feb. 15. The win moves the Pack to 2-1 on the year, while the Hoosiers slip to 0-6.
Call helped her cause at the plate with a 2-for-3 performance, as did Alyssa Ishibashi.
Ashley Hobbs (0-2) took the loss in relief for Indiana.
Back-to-back solo jacks in the top of the third from Kristine Bechtholdt and Bethaney Wells put the Pack up 2-zip. It was the first time State batters had gone yard in consecutive at-bats since Bechtholdt and Claudia Cooper did the same against Georgia Tech last April 5th.
The Hoosiers certainly made things interesting in the bottom of the fifth, putting runners on second and third with no outs. Call, however, buckled down and induced two foul outs and a routine pop-up to work her way out of the jam.
The long ball worked against State in the bottom of the sixth with Indiana knotting the score at 2-all on a Brittany Stein homer to left center.
State answered immediately in the top of the seventh, putting up one run to take the lead at 3-2. Wells walked and Ishibashi sent a single into center, which was misplayed and allowed runners to advance to third and second. Alyssa Allbritten later pushed a two out single up the middle, bringing Wells across the plate.
Indiana threatened in the bottom of the seventh by putting two runners on, but State kept the Hoosiers from capitalizing.
NC State will return to the field at the Cathedral City Classic, Feb. 19-21, in Cathedral City, Calif.
