HOUSTON, Texas Bridget Desbois picked a mighty fine time to deliver NC State’s first hit of the season. After being held hitless for 5 2/3 innings, Desbois lined a two run single into left center to lift NC State over No. 7 Oklahoma, 2-1, in its season opener at the Marriott Houston Classic on Friday, Feb. 13. The win marks the Pack's third over a top-10 program in school history.
State is now 2-0 all-time against Oklahoma.
Lindsay Campana (1-0) held the Sooners to just three hits while racking up five K’s. D.J. Mathis (2-2) took the loss. NC State stands at 1-0, while OU falls to 4-2.
Oklahoma got on board in the bottom of the fourth. Katie Norris singled to center and Samantha Ricketts dropped a bunt in front of the plate to put runners on first and second. Lindsey Vandever then lined a single to center, and the Sooners grabbed a run when Lauren Peters misplayed the bounce in the outfield grass.
Desbois and Stephanie Call both flashed some serious leather in the bottom of the fifth. Desbois corralled two hot grounders to third, and Call snagged a laser down the first base line to end the inning.
The game changed completely in the top of the sixth. Peters reached first on a strike three passed ball, and a pitch hit Alyssa Ishibashi for the second time in the game. Alyssa Allbritten then drew a walk to load the bases before Desbois’ base hit, the Pack’s first of the game, put State up 2-1 for good.
NC State and Oklahoma State started its game, but it has since been called off due to weather. The Pack will return with two games tomorrow, taking on Texas State (12 p.m. EST) and No. 14 Houston (8 p.m. EST).
