RALEIGH, N.C. Shayla Fields scored 22 points and Bonae Holston added 20 in leading NC State back from a double-digit halftime deficit for a 59-51 victory over Wake Forest Thursday night at Reynolds Coliseum.
NC State (10-14, 2-7 ACC) exploded out of the lockerroom in the second half with a 13-2 run to erase an 11-point halftime deficit. A Fields three-pointer 3:41 into the half knotted things at 34-all for the first tie of the contest.
A one-possession game for the next 10 minutes, Holston (9-14 FG) layed in a handoff from Fields to make it 42-all with six minutes to go. The stingy Wolfpack defense then went to work, holding Wake scoreless the next 7:47.
Nikitta Gartrell made the most of her only points of the game, giving the Pack its first lead in a long while with a nifty finger roll for a 44-42 advantage. That was part of a 10-0 run that gave NC State a 50-42 lead with under two minutes to play.
Wake got back to within five, 56-51, but Fields iced the victory by converting 3-of-4 free throw attempts in the final 30 seconds to even the Wolfpack’s record to 2-2 in the last four games.
NC State limited Wake to only 19 second-half points and shot 48.1 percent after halftime to gain the victory its first after trailing by 10 or more points since coming back from 14 down against South Carolina in the first round of the Women’s NIT last season.
Fields and Holston became the first NC State duo to score 20 or more points in the same game since Keisha Brown (26) and Ashley Key (22) did so vs. Iowa State on Nov. 25, 2005.
NC State displayed a suffocating defense from the opening tip of the ball game. A pair of clock violations by Wake Forest helped the Pack pull in front 9-0 in the first five minutes of action. Holston was the catalyst on the offensive end with six points, while Inga Muciniece led the defensive stand with two of the team’s three early blocks.
The Deacs stormed right back by scoring 15 of the game’s next 17 points to take a 15-11 lead midway through the opening half. Camille Collier gave the visitors its first lead on a three-pointer at the 10:49 mark and Secily Ray (12 points) added another from downtown 20 seconds later to extend the run to a four-point advantage.
The turnovers began to mount for the Pack (13 in the first half), allowing the Deacs to extend their lead to 25-17 after a Brittany Waters layup with 3:17 left in the first half.
Consecutive buckets by Lucy Ellison and Holston cut the Pack’s deficit to 25-21, but a Ray layup just before the buzzer sent Wake into intermission leading 32-21.
Lucy Ellison hauled in a career-high 14 rebounds for NC State, while Alex Tchangoue scored a team-high 18 for Wake Forest (17-6, 4-5 ACC)
