WASHINGTON, D.C. – Monica McNutt’s putback with 13.7 seconds left gave Georgetown a 67-66 victory over NC State Tuesday night at McDonough Arena.
Brittany Strachan nearly capped off the best game of her career at NC State (7-5) with a short jumper from the baseline, but it went off the back iron as time expired and the Hoyas earned its ninth-straight win.
Strachan scored a career-best 18 points to lead the Wolfpack, who led 66-61 after an Emili Tasler (10 points) steal and coast-to-coast layup with 1:51 to play.
Sugar Rodgers (19 points) missed three straight free throws down the stretch, but McNutt hauled in the offensive rebound and floated in a jumper for the game-winning bucket.
Turnovers plagued NC State all night allowing the Hoyas to stay in the game. A season-high 30 giveaways turned into 27 Georgetown points.
Luckily for the Pack it had its hot hand going from the three-point line, draining 11-of-20 attempts from beyond the arc.
10 straight points out of the locker room by Georgetown erased the seven-point advantage the Wolfpack enjoyed at the half. Eight turnovers in the first six minutes fueled the Hoyas to grab a 42-41 lead.
The Pack settled down to score eight in a row, including back-to-back three’s from Strachan and Marissa Kastanek (15 points) for a 49-42 lead.
But Georgetown stormed right back to tie it 51-all and it was a one-possession game until Lucy Ellison’s only bucket off the game, which wound up a three-point play, put the Pack up 64-59 with 2:54 left.
A dominating effort on the glass and long-range sharp shooting put NC State up 39-32 at the half.
Strachan had her career-best effort by the intermission with 15 first-half points and the Pack went 7-of-13 from three-point land.
Trailing 4-0 after another sluggish start, the Pack ran off 12 in a row for a 12-4 lead after an old-fashioned three-point play by Amber White with 13:48 left in the first half.
A conventional three-point play, this time by Kastanek, and a third three-ball of the half by the freshman gave the Pack a 34-21 lead with 4:40 left until halftime.
They Hoyas ran off seven straight to make it 34-28 moments later.
However, a layup by Strachan in the late stages of the first half but NC State back up 10, 39-29, but Georgetown scored the final three points of the opening stanza to make it 39-32 in favor of the Wolfpack at halftime.
Jaleesa Butler had 10 of her 18 in the first half to lead the Hoyas.
NC State hosts Seton Hall on December 28 at 7 p.m., at Reynolds Coliseum.
