RALEIGH, N.C. - Bonae Holston scored a game-high 17 points to send NC State to a 66-53 victory over Winthrop Saturday evening at Reynolds Coliseum.
NC State (7-4) took control of the game with a 17-5 run to open the second half after a sluggish first 20 minutes that saw the Pack shoot just 29.4 percent.
Junior Brittany Stachan contributed 10 points off the bench for the Wolfpack.
Winthrop (4-6) was led by Shanice Cole's 15 points and Jessica Fansler added 10.
The Eagles cut their deficit down to 10, but Sharnise Beal drilled her first three of the year for a 58-45 lead with under five minutes to play.
The Pack's lead never went under nine the rest of the game as the advantage grew to 15 in the final minutes of the game.
Holston singlehandedly kept NC State in the game in the opening half with 12 points.
The Pack fell behind immediately 11-4 at the first media timeout, but rallied with a 9-0 spurt to take a 13-11 lead with 13:07 showing on the half.
“Our slow starts are frustrating," said coach Kellie Harper "We have to figure it out. You keep building such a deficit, eventually it will catch up and already has in previous games.
"We’re considering changing the starting lineup. Whether it’s the pregame routine or the starting lineup, something has to change.”
It was a tight affair the remainder of the stanza. The lead changed hands four times and there was seven ties in the first 20 minutes of the game.
NC State managed a five-point advantage with just over a minute left until halftime, but Winthrop canned a three-pointer to make it a 30-28 Pack advantage at the break.
NC State visits Georgetown Tuesday at 7 p.m., in Washington, D.C.
