NORFOLK, Va. – Tia Bell and Marissa Kastanek each scored 12 points to send NC State to a 62-52 victory at Old Dominion Monday night at Ted Constant Center.
NC State (4-1) won its third straight by allowing a season-low 34.6 percent shooting percentage to Old Dominion (0-3), who has lost to Stanford and Maryland before tonight.
After the Lady Monarchs cut their deficit down to just two points, 36-34, early in the second half, Brittany Strachan (four points, eight rebounds) capped a 10-2 run with a short baseline jumper for a 46-36 lead with 10 minutes to play.
The lead dwindled down to five with 3:25 to play after a Jackie Cook hoop, but NC State, the ACC’s leading free throw shooters, made eight straight from the stripe, including six in a row by Lucy Ellison, to earn the victory.
The Pack had been just 1-of-7 in the game from the line before making its final eight attempts.
NC State took advantage of the absence of 6-0 All-CAA forward Jessica Canady by hauling in 40 rebounds, including 17 on the offensive end.
NC State went into halftime leading 32-25 thanks primarily to a relentless defense the entire first 20 minutes of the game.
ODU went nearly eight minutes between field goals, allowing the visitors to take a 28-21 lead after an Amber White fast-break layup with 2:31 left.
Earlier, Emili Tasler’s three-pointer after an extended offensive possession that featured three offensive rebounds snapped an 18-all tie at the 8:33 mark.
Bell had the most success in the first half with 10 points by the intermission. She opened up a 26-20 lead after consecutive buckets and one last turnaround jumper in the final minute to give NC State the seven-point advantage at the break.
ODU wore pink jerseys to honor former Wolfpack coach Kay Yow.
Additionally, ODU lost for just the 17th time at home since 2002-03 season when the Constant Center opened.
Bonae Holston had eight points and eight boards in her return trip to the Hampton Roads are. The sophomore hails from Newport News, about 15 minutes from the ODU campus.
Shadasia Green led ODU with 13 points.
NC State will have a quick turnaround from tonight’s game. After busing back to Raleigh, and a day off Tuesday, the team will travel Wednesday morning to Nashville, Tenn., for the Thanksgiving holiday. The Wolfpack will compete in Vanderbilt’s tournament on Friday against Northwestern State at 4 p.m. The following day the club will take on either the host Commodores or Austin Peay.
