No. 49 Men's Tennis Defeats Old Dominion

RALEIGH, N.C. - The No. 49 NC State men's tennis defeated Old Dominion, 4-3, on Sunday, Jan. 25 in Raleigh, N.C. Old Dominion took the doubles point, but the Pack won four singles matches to grab the win. NC State is now 3-1, and Old Dominion falls to 3-1 on the season.
Old Dominion earned the 1-0 lead after a close match between the No. 3 doubles teams. Senior Christian Welte and redshirt freshman Julian Sullivan fell to the No. 43 nationally ranked pair of Aleksandr Seleznev and Tobias Fanselow, 8-3, at No. 1, and senior Jay Weinacker and freshman Jaime Pulgar tied up the doubles with an 8-6 victory over Matt Fawcett and Krzysztof Muzalewski at No. 2. The doubles point came down to a close tie-break, but junior Frideric Prandecki and sophomore David Chermak fell to Yakov Diskin and Alex Funkhouser, 9-8(9-7) at No. 3.
Pulgar won the first singles match of the day, defeating Funkhouser, 6-2, 6-3, at No. 4, and No. 124 Welte followed with a victory over No. 80 Tobias Fanselow, 6-4, 6-2, at No. 2. No. 55 Weinacker collected his 93rd career win after taking down Seleznev, 7-5, 6-7(4), 6-4, at No. 1, giving the Pack the 3-1 advantage.
Senior Derek Stephens fell to Diskin, 6-7(2), 7-6(8-6), 6-0, at No. 3, and Chermak fell to Fawcett, 7-5, 7-5, at No. 5. The win was decided by the No. 6 singles, and redshirt freshman Eric Turner defeated Muzalewski, 6-4, 4-6, 6-3, to win the match for the Pack.
The Pack will head to the National Team Playoffs in Gainesville, Fla. to face Texas A&M on Jan. 30.
