RALEIGH, N.C. NC State struggled to shoot just 29.3 percent Thursday night in a 64-59 loss to Florida State in the ACC home opener for the Wolfpack.
Shayla Fields scored a game-high 25 points to lead NC State (8-9, 0-2 ACC), but the other two top scorers for the Pack Nikitta Gartrell and Sharnise Beal combined to shoot just 2-for-26 from the floor.
Jacinta Monroe paced four Florida State (15-4, 3-0 ACC) players in double figures scoring with 14, while Courtney Ward had 12 points, Mara Freshour had 11 points and Tanae Davis-Cain tossed in 10 points.
FSU seemed in control heading down the stretch with a double-digit lead and after a Monroe layup just before the four-minute mark, the Seminoles led 58-41.
But the Pack dug in and started bombing away from beyond the arc connecting on five three-pointers in the final 3:33 of the game to cut deep into its deficit. Although they ran out of time at the end, a three by Brittany Strachan (12 points) got NC State within six, 62-56.
Two free throws from Monroe with seven seconds to play sealed any thoughts of a monumental comeback for the home standing Wolfpack.
Freshman Bonae Holston was another bright spot for NC State. A game removed from 19 points and 15 rebounds in her league debut against North Carolina, the Newport News, Va., native dropped in 13 points and grabbed 10 boards for a second consecutive double-double.
A 6-5 Wolfpack lead in the early going was erased after the Seminoles put together an 18-6 run to take a 23-12 lead at the 10:59 mark of the first half, the largest advantage of the opening 20 minutes.
A brief 7-2 spurt by NC State got them to within five, 29-24, but a layup by Cierra Bravard sent FSU up 31-24 at the half.
The visitors did most its damage in the paint, holding a 28-8 advantage, while also capitalizing on 12 Pack turnovers and turning them into 18 points. NC State only converted 13 giveaways into a mere five points, but did get 25 points from its bench.
NC State hosts No. 4/10 Duke Monday at 5 p.m. from Reynolds Coliseum.
