RALEIGH, N.C. Three in-season tournaments, including one hosted by NC State, and 15 home dates at historic Reynolds Coliseum highlight the 2008-09 Wolfpack women’s basketball schedule, which was released Thursday by the ACC.
NC State will have a total of 14 games against teams that advanced to postseason tournaments last year, including eight games against teams that went to the 2008 NCAA Tournament.
“We have put together a little different looking schedule this year from recent seasons with three tournaments to begin the year,” said Hall of Fame head coach Kay Yow. “But we think the caliber of opponents in the non-conference should set us up for the always difficult road through the ACC.”
NC State will open its 2008-09 campaign the weekend of November 15 and 16 by hosting the NC State Tournament. The Pack will open at home for the seventh straight season, but this marks the first time since 2001-02 that the schedule begins with the Wolfpack hosting its own tournament, which includes Charlotte, Southern California and U-W Milwaukee.
The tournament schedule continues the following weekend at the Minnesota Tournament on November 22 and 23. The field also includes the host Golden Gophers, American and Yale.
The Wolfpack then travels to Miami for the FIU Tournament on November 28 and 29 during the Thanksgiving weekend. The Pack will play FIU on Friday, followed by Auburn the next day, marking the first of four games against clubs from the Southeastern Conference this season.
NC State once again takes part in the annual ACC/Big 10 Challenge on December 5 at Michigan.
The non-conference schedule also features home dates with Florida, Ole Miss, Georgetown and South Carolina. The Pack defeated all three schools from the SEC last season, including the Gators and Gamecocks during the Women’s NIT run at the end of last year.
The Wolfpack also visits the New York City area for the first time since December 2004. The Pack takes on Seton Hall on December 20 and Columbia on December 22, before taking a weeklong break for the Christmas holiday.
Another rare occurrence takes place on New Years Eve when the Pack will play a game on the last day of the calendar year for just the fifth time since 1990. Georgetown visits Reynolds for a 5 pm match up.
NC State will also be playing an exhibition contest against Premier Players on November 5 at Reynolds.
NC State’s ACC season will start with a trip to North Carolina on January 11. The Pack will be facing the Tar Heels, Boston College and Wake Forest both home and away this season. In other league contests, Clemson, Duke, Florida State and Virginia will visit Raleigh, while the Pack visits Georgia Tech, Maryland, Miami and Virginia Tech.
The fourth annual Hoops for Hope game takes place Sunday, February 15 against Virginia and is scheduled for an ESPN2 broadcast at 3:30 p.m.
The ACC Tournament is back at the Greensboro Coliseum for the ninth straight year and will be played March 5-8.
