BALTIMORE, Md. Kara Baldy scored twice in leading NC State to a 2-1 women’s soccer victory over UMBC Sunday afternoon at UMBC Soccer Stadium.
Playing on the road for the first time all season, NC State improves to a perfect 7-0 on the season, which continues its best start to a season since 1991
UMBC falls to 1-6.
The Wolfpack came out strong this afternoon by peppering goalie Christine Bacinski with shot after shot in the opening minutes. Meredith Parrilla’s header in the fifth minute went just wide. After a couple more attempts, Kara Baldy finally made one count when she dribbled around the Retriever defense and put a shot into the upper right corner for a 1-0 lead at the 16:52 mark.
NC State’s defense was also controlling the action on the other end of the field by holding UMBC to no shots until the 28-minute mark. A few moments later NC State keeper Kim Kern (five saves) was forced to make two saves and the score would go into halftime with NC State up 1-0.
The second half was more of the same as Lindsay Vera had an opportunity in the opening minutes but Bacinski made one of her 11 saves in net.
Baldy would strike for the second time in the match in the 60th minute. Gia Cipollini got the play started with a corner kick that went to Meredith Parrilla and eventually found the foot of Baldy and she deposited her sixth goal of the season for a 2-0 advantage.
UMBC climbed back into the match when Morgan Warrington scored the first goal against Kern all season long, snapping a stretch of 340 minutes to begin her collegiate career for the first-year keeper from Raleigh.
The home team refused to quit and after being outshot the entire match. UMBC nearly sent the game into overtime with a last minute rally. JoAnne Jackson had a corner kick with 35 seconds left in regulation. The cross was sent to Erin Johnson and she got a shot off but, it sailed high and the Wolfpack held on for the win.
The Wolfpack held a commanding 24-11 advantage in shots.
